5 Tips for a Successful CareerFest

Greetings from the Career Services Center! Just one week until next Friday's Fall CareerFest 2017 - an annual career fair in Cleveland, Ohio providing students the opportunity to meet with over 50 organizations, including businesses, corporations, non-profit groups, government agencies, and graduate schools! For students attending or thinking about attending, we have a few suggestions for students to make the event a success!

1. Register!

If you haven't done so already, please register for the event! If you register for the event, we will be able to contact you with updates prior to the event in case anything might change, and we will create a printed nametag which will be waiting for you at the event.

Pre-registration will close on Wednesday 9/20, but if you were unable to pre-register, please still come - you will be able to sign up at the door!

2. Research

You can also get the Guidebook on your phone through the free app: https://guidebook.com/g/oficcf17cle

Android and iOS users:
1         Tap the "Download" button to download the free Guidebook app
2         Open Guidebook and you can find our "* 2017 OFIC CareerFest * Cleveland" guide
3         Tap "Enter passphrase" and enter cle17 to download our guide

The more you research the companies and opportunities available, the better prepared you will be to make a good impression.

3. Prepare Your Pitch & Resume

Make sure to take many copies of your resume with you - we suggest 25 or more, to be safe. If you need help preparing your resume for the event, please stop by the Career Services Center during walk-in hours - 1:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday or 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

You should also prepare a brief elevator pitch to introduce yourself to recruiters at the event. This should introduce your educational background, professional skills, and professional goals.

For more guidance on crafting a pitch and preparing yourself for career fairs, please see our slides from the COBE Career Day Prep Session, which covered many career fair preparation topics.

4. Know Where to Go

CareerFest takes place at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland - 300 Lakeside Avenue E, Cleveland OH 44113. Students attending CareerFest should park in the ABM AECOM Garage - lot F on this map - at 1301 East 6th St. If you park in that parking garage, vouchers will be available at registration that will cover the cost of your parking. If you park in any other garage, we cannot cover your parking. Please take care to park in that garage.

5. Follow up

After the fair, follow up by sending Thank You cards (emails are okay, but written notes can really stand out) to recruiters with whom you have spoken. Make sure to formally apply online for any open positions you spoke with recruiters about if you have not already done so.

Bonus: You Could Win an Amazon Echo!

Two very lucky attendees will walk away from the fair not only with lots of job leads and networking opportunities, but also possibly an Amazon Echo! If you tweet @The_OFIC on Twitter and use the hashtag #careerfest17 you will be entered to win.

See all the details on the OFIC website!
